Average cost of a wedding
What US couples actually spent, according to the largest annual survey of weddings, and the one number that moves your cost more than any other.
The Knot’s 2025 Real Weddings Study surveyed nearly 17,000 US couples married in 2024. It found the average wedding cost $33,000, slightly less than the $35,000 average for 2023. Behind that headline, the spread is wide, and guest count explains more of it than anything else.

Why guest count matters more than the venue’s price tag
A wedding has two kinds of cost. Fixed costs stay the same whether 40 or 140 people come: the photographer, the band, your attire, the officiant. Per-guest costs grow with every name: food, drinks, chairs, rentals, invitations, favours. Drag the guest count and watch which part takes over.

Fixed 44% Per-guest 56%
$320 per guest, all-in. Removing 10 guests saves $1,800.
Notice how the all-in cost per guest falls as the list grows, because fixed costs are shared across more people, even though the total keeps rising. That is why a big wedding can look “good value” per head and still cost far more.
What pushes a wedding above or below average
- Guest count. The single biggest factor, as the $15,000 vs $42,000 gap in The Knot’s data shows.
- Region. Big-city venues and vendors charge more; the Mid-Atlantic averaged $17,000 more than the Midwest.
- Season and day. Saturdays in peak months cost the most; Fridays, Sundays and winter dates are often cheaper.
- Venue type. A venue with in-house catering and rentals can cost less overall than a “cheap” empty barn where everything is hired in.
- Service charges and tax. Often 18–25% service plus sales tax on catering, easy to miss in early quotes.
What does catering cost per person?
Catering quotes vary enormously by region, menu and service style, so treat any single figure with caution. As a planning estimate, buffets and family-style meals are usually cheaper per head than plated dinners, and food trucks or drop-off catering cheaper still. Ask for quotes that include staff, rentals, service charge and tax so you are comparing like with like, then put the figure into the budget calculator.
Ready to turn this into your own number? Start with the guest list, because the head count drives everything else.
Questions couples ask
What is the average cost of a wedding in the US?
The Knot’s 2025 Real Weddings Study, which surveyed nearly 17,000 US couples, put the average cost of a 2024 wedding at $33,000, down slightly from $35,000 in 2023.
How much does guest count change the cost?
A lot. In the same study, weddings with 50 guests or fewer averaged $15,000, while weddings with more than 100 guests averaged $42,000.
Are destination weddings more expensive?
On average, yes: The Knot reported $39,000 for destination weddings against $32,000 for hometown weddings in 2024, though guests usually pay their own travel and destination guest lists tend to be smaller.
Where are weddings most expensive?
Regional differences are large. The Knot reported an average of $46,000 in the Mid-Atlantic compared with $29,000 in the Midwest for 2024 weddings.
Is the average a good budget target?
Not necessarily. An average is pulled up by a smaller number of very expensive weddings, so many couples spend well below it. Start from what you can afford and your guest count.
