Why a 60-inch round seats eight, not ten
Caterers size tables by the edge each guest needs: about 24 inches for a plate, glasses and elbows. A round table’s edge is π × diameter, so drag the size and watch the seats change.
π × 60 = 188 in of edge ÷ 24 = 7 seats.
That’s why rentals list a 60″ round as “8–10”: 10 only works at 18–19 inches each, which is knee-to-knee. Chargers and big centrepieces push you toward the lower number.
How to make a wedding seating chart without a family feud
- Wait for RSVPs. Seat only confirmed guests; a chart built on invitations gets rebuilt twice.
- Place the fixed tables first. Head or sweetheart table, then parents and grandparents closest to you.
- Seat groups, not individuals. Give each guest a group (work, college, Mum’s side) and use Auto-seat to keep groups whole.
- Mix the leftovers thoughtfully. Put the plus-ones and the friends-of-nobody with people of similar age or interests, not at a “misc” table by the kitchen.
- Mind the room. Older guests away from speakers, families with small children near an exit, and dancers near the floor.
- Send the final chart a week out. Print the table view for the venue and the A–Z escort list for the welcome table.
Common table sizes
| Table | Comfortable | Maximum |
|---|---|---|
| 48″ round | 6 | 8 |
| 60″ round | 8 | 10 |
| 72″ round | 10 | 12 |
| 6 ft × 30″ banquet | 6 | 8 (with ends) |
| 8 ft × 30″ banquet | 8 | 10 (with ends) |
Capacities follow the common 24-inch-per-guest rule used by US rental companies; always confirm with your venue.
Questions couples ask
How many guests fit at a round wedding table?
A 60-inch round seats 8 comfortably and 10 snugly; a 72-inch round seats 10 comfortably and 12 snugly. Caterers plan roughly 24 inches of table edge per guest, more if chargers or large place settings are used.
Who sits at the head table or sweetheart table?
A head table traditionally seats the couple and the wedding party, sometimes with partners. A sweetheart table seats only the couple, which frees you to seat the wedding party with their own partners and friends.
Where should parents sit?
Parents and grandparents usually get the tables closest to the couple. With divorced parents, give each their own table of family and friends at equal distance rather than forcing them together.
When should we make the seating chart?
Start a rough plan once invitations go out, then finalise after the RSVP deadline, typically two to three weeks before the wedding. Venues and caterers normally want the final chart about a week out.
Do we need assigned seats or just assigned tables?
For most receptions, assigning tables is enough and guests choose their own seat. Assigned seats make sense at formal plated dinners where servers need to know each meal choice by position.
